Lynx bus ridership is low. Here's how data can help.

At full capacity, Central Florida’s Lynx bus system can transport 110 million people every year. Last year saw less than 20% of that number aboard vehicles on fixed routes and Lymmo, the bus rapid transit in downtown Orlando.

While ridership has climbed for the last two years, from 14 million in 2021 to over 18 million in 2023, there’s still a long way to go to make the most of the system that takes about $190 million per year to run and another $134 million in capital investments for facilities, passenger amenities, fleet and more.

Director of Marketing Communications Matthew Friedman said Lynx is taking several steps to increase ridership, “including improvements with on-time performance, making routes more direct and quicker, and adding frequency and earlier and later service according to demand.”

But it doesn’t stop there, said CEO Sam Mahdavian of Orlando-based SplusM LLC. The tech startup he founded develops transportation solutions for government agencies and companies, fusing data science with traditional engineering.
