Severance pledge uncertain as Tupperware announces layoffs

Thirty case filings on Nov. 5-6 illuminated the status of Tupperware Brand Corp.’s Ch. 11 bankruptcy case — which soon will come to a close as final matters are resolved. 

Tupperware on Nov. 5 notified the Florida Department of Commerce it will shutter its Orlando headquarters and lay off 145 Orlando employees by Dec. 31.

One notable filing pertains to contractual obligations for which Tupperware is still on the hook.

Almost 160 severance agreements for employees laid off from the firm’s Hemingway, South Carolina, plant over the summer are being scrutinized. The plant — Tupperware’s last in the U.S. — closed this year and, at the time, plans were to move the manufacturing operations there to Mexico. The plant's final closure had been set for Jan. 14, 2025, but it is unknown what Tupperware's new owner, Ad Hoc Group, will do regarding manufacturing.
