Space industry grapples with workforce shortage

With interest growing in commercial spaceflight around the world, companies everywhere — especially in Volusia and Brevard counties — are trying to grow their workforce to meet the new needs of the final frontier.

However, some employers are running into pitfalls.

In supporting the Florida Atlantic Workforce Alliance, Stephanie Robinson — business liaison and project coordinator with CareerSource Brevard Flagler Volusia — has noticed a gap between the number of experienced workers retiring and the young workforce coming in.

“As an example, 41% of the Siemens US workforce is projected to retire in the next five to 10 years,” said Robinson. “Additional education programs are needed to keep pace with the increased demand for skilled talent.”

That gap is not a Florida-specific problem.
