Fatal CEO shooting sparks call for better executive protection

The Dec. 4 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel has sent shockwaves through corporate America, prompting CEOs nationwide to reassess their personal security protocols.

The tragedy underscores a stark reality: Even high-level executives with access to protection often underestimate the risks they face. 

“Bigger companies usually are required by their liability insurance companies to provide security details to their CEOs, CFOs and COOs, but that doesn’t mean the executives always use that protection,” said Todd Dukes, founder of SEC Worldwide & Associates, an Orlando-based executive protection firm.
